So I finally got my 1964 Starcraft Cobra, a.k.a Azula, in the water. I ended up taking it to a shop to have the carb rebuilt, and they also replaced the starter solenoid so the electric start works. I picked it up on Tuesday, and went out with my father in law for a test run about an hour ago.

I’ve never driven a boat so this was VERY exciting. I’m also very glad I had some one with more experience on board to help me out. The boat don’t sink, and engine fired up fine all good signs. So we got out of the little landing, under the bride, and out into the bay.

This was awesome! We opened up the throttle bit by bit, started making circles out on the open water, not wanting to get too far out. There I was driving my own motor boat.

Then the engine died:(

We got it running again. Figured it just needed to warm up. Ran great for another 5 minutes, started sputtering then died again. Took longer to get started this time, and my father in law notice the fuel line connection was a bit loose. So we rode around for a while, with him holding the fuel line on firmly. This time I ran much longer, but did event die again.

Then it took even longer to start. So we headed back. As slowed down, and got closer to no wake speed to go under the bridge, it died. We didn’t bother to get it running again just paddle back to the landing.

I’m equally bummed and Happy that I got to take it out and get a taste of exactly the boating experience I was looking for. The size style, handling oh this boat is exactly what I wanted.

Oh and when I got home I cracked open the drain plug on the lower unit and found milky oil. So water is getting in there.

This boat is going to be way more of a project than I wanted, but hey it was 400 bucks so really it’s what I should have expected lol.

And now you know the true meaning of B.O.A.T. Break Out Another Thousand.

It looks beautiful, though. And glad more went right than wrong. Congratulations.

The good news is that would still only be 2000 invest. I only have about a grand in it right now

There is no such thing as “investing” in a boat

But looks like money well spent anyway!

Awesome! An overall successful test run of a new (old) runabout.

Those old two stroke outboards are temperamental and thirsty but so much fun.

Enjoy boat ownership. It sometimes makes project car ownership look reasonable. It is cheaper, but sometimes far more difficult .

Thats not bad at all, then.

I’ d love to get a small boat like yours, but Mrs Snuze is firmly against boats.

Check the fuel pump and make sure it’s getting a good amount of fuel to the carb. If the carb was just rebuilt, make sure the fuel pump is getting adequate flow to the bowl. If the pump is good, take it back to the rebuilder and verify everything is working properly.
